Matthijs Langelaar, Delft University of Technology presents about “Topology Optimization for AM”

Matthijs Langelaar, Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology, presents at the 3D Design & Engineering Conference: “Developments in Topology Optimization for Additive Manufacturing”.

Topology optimization is a computational design process that generates optimized geometries. It is used successfully in many industries, including aerospace, automotive, etc. Resulting designs are often geometrically complex, and, until recently, primarily served as inspiration for the actual design due to fabrication limitations.
Advances in additive manufacturing today make it possible to realize functional parts with complex geometries using high quality materials. Thus a key restriction has been lifted, making the full performance increase of topology optimized parts available to industrial applications. This presentation will address the main concepts behind topology optimization and recent developments regarding design for additive manufacturing.

About Matthijs Langelaar
Matthijs is currently active as Assistant Professor within the Structural Optimization and Mechanics research group at Delft University of Technology, faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering. His research expertise is Topology Optimization, with specific focus on the development of more efficient algorithms, extending the range of design problems that can be considered and integrating more aspects of the (additive) manufacturing process into the topology optimization.
